Apple iOS up to 12.1.2 SQLite sql injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Apple iOS up to 12.1.2 (Smartphone Operating System). This affects an unknown code block of the component SQLite. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

SQLite 3.25.2, when queries are run on a table with a malformed PRIMARY KEY, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) by leveraging the ability to run arbitrary SQL statements (such as in certain WebSQL use cases).

The bug was discovered 01/22/2019. The weakness was presented 01/22/2019 by Patrick Wardle (OSS-Fuzz) with Tencent as HT209443 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2018-20505 since 12/26/2018. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/04/2020). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1505 according to MITRE ATT&CK. The advisory points out:

Multiple memory corruption issues were addressed with improved input validation.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 121473 (Apple iTunes < 12.9.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities (credentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 371588 (Apple iCloud for Windows Prior to 7.10 Multiple Vulnerabilities(HT209451)).

Upgrading to version 12.1.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (121473). See 101255, 101256, 101257 and 101258 for similar entries.
