An issue was discovered in elfutils 0.175. A segmentation fault can occur in the function elf64_xlatetom in libelf/elf32_xlatetom.c, due to dwfl_segment_report_module not checking whether the dyn data read from a core file is truncated. A crafted input can cause a program crash, leading to denial-of-service, as demonstrated by eu-stack.

The bug was discovered 01/22/2019. The weakness was disclosed 01/29/2019 by Agostino Sarubbo with Gentoo (Website). The advisory is available at sourceware.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2019-7150 since 01/28/2019. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 6 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 277651 (Fedora Security Update for elfutils (FEDORA-2019-44a9d99647)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
