A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel 4.16 (Operating System). This affects the function handle_rx
of the component vhost_net Driver. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds write vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-787. The product writes data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's handle_rx() function in the [vhost_net] driver. A malicious virtual guest, under specific conditions, can trigger an out-of-bounds write in a kmalloc-8 slab on a virtual host which may lead to a kernel memory corruption and a system panic. Due to the nature of the flaw, privilege escalation cannot be fully ruled out. Versions from v4.16 and newer are vulnerable.
The bug was discovered 01/25/2019. The weakness was released 01/29/2019 by Jason Wang with Red Hat as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2018-16880 since 09/11/2018. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 121519 (Fedora 28 : kernel / kernel-headers / kernel-tools (2019-4002b91800)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 197387 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux, Linux-azure, Linux-gcp, Linux-kvm, Linux-raspi2 Vulnerabilities (USN-3903-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (121519). Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at 129082.
