Apple iOS up to 7.1 WebKit memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Apple iOS up to 7.1 (Smartphone Operating System). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown part of the component WebKit. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

WebKit, as used in Apple Safari before 6.1.3 and 7.x before 7.0.3, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) via a crafted web site, a different vulnerability than other WebKit CVEs listed in APPLE-SA-2014-04-01-1.

The weakness was presented 04/22/2014 with Google Chrome Security Team as HT6208 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-1310 since 01/08/2014. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 12/26/2024). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future. The advisory points out:

Multiple memory corruption issues existed in WebKit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73304 (Mac OS X : Apple Safari < 6.1.3 / 7.0.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121875 (Apple Safari 6.1.3 / 7.0.3 Not Installed (HT6181)).

Upgrading to version 7.1.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:

These issues were addressed through improved memory handling.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (73304), SecurityFocus (BID 66575†), Secunia (SA58140†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-53009†).
