A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Sun Solaris up to 10 (Operating System). This issue affects the function slc_add_reply
of the component Telnet Client. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Buffer overflow in the slc_add_reply function in various BSD-based Telnet clients, when handling LINEMODE suboptions, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a reply with a large number of Set Local Character (SLC) commands.
The bug was discovered 03/28/2005. The weakness was disclosed 03/28/2005 by Gaƫl Delalleau with iDEFENSE (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at idefense.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Sun. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-0469 since 02/18/2005. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a private exploit are known.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 19270 (Debian DSA-765-1 : heimdal - buffer overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38522 (Multiple Vendor Telnet Client Information Disclosure Vulnerability).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at sunsolve.sun.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 3537. In this case the pattern |FF FA|'|01|
is used for detection.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (19270), SecurityFocus (BID 12918†), OSVDB (15094†), Secunia (SA14754†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1013575†). The entries VDB-1312, VDB-1310, VDB-1308 and VDB-1313 are pretty similar.
