A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Apache Struts up to 1.3.10 (Programming Tool Software). Affected is an unknown part of the component Class Loader. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:
The ActionForm object in Apache Struts 1.x through 1.3.10 allows remote attackers to "manipulate" the ClassLoader and execute arbitrary code via the class parameter, which is passed to the getClass method.
The weakness was released 04/24/2014 by Takeshi Terada and Rene Gielen as Struts up to 2.3.16.1: Zero-Day Exploit Mitigation as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at struts.apache.org. The vendor was not involved in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-0114 since 12/03/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 04/30/2019). This vulnerability has a historic impact due to its background and reception.
It is declared as highly functional. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73922 (CentOS 5 : struts (CESA-2014:0474)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 87268 (Oracle WebLogic Server Multiple Unspecified Vulnerabilities (CPUOCT2014)).
It is possible to mitigate the problem by applying the configuration setting param name="excludeParams"
. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:
A security fix release fully addressing this issue is in preparation and will be released as soon as possible. Once the release is available, all Struts 2 users are strongly recommended to update their installations. Until the release is available, all Struts 2 users are strongly recommended to apply [the] following mitigation. (see release)
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (92889) and Tenable (73922). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 13067, 67115, 67116 and 67117.
