A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Atlassian SourceTree up to 3.0.14 on Windows. This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality of the component Mercurial Repository Handler. The manipulation as part of a Filename leads to a command injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-77. The product constructs all or part of a command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended command when it is sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
There was an argument injection vulnerability in Atlassian Sourcetree for Windows from version 0.5a before version 3.0.15 via filenames in Mercurial repositories. A remote attacker with permission to commit to a Mercurial repository linked in Sourcetree for Windows is able to exploit this issue to gain code execution on the system.
The bug was discovered 02/20/2019. The weakness was disclosed 03/08/2019 (Website). The advisory is available at jira.atlassian.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-20235 since 12/19/2018. The attack can be initiated remotely. The successful exploitation needs a single authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1202 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 16 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 371705 (Atlassian Sourcetree Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 3.0.15 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at SecurityFocus (BID 105523†). The entries VDB-124949, VDB-131481 and VDB-131483 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
