The ptrace system call in IBM AIX 5.3, 6.1, and 7.1, and VIOS 2.2.x, allows local users to cause a denial of service (system crash) or obtain sensitive information from kernel memory via a crafted PT_LDINFO operation.
The issue has been introduced in 08/13/2004. The weakness was shared 05/02/2014 as ptrace_advisory.asc as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at aix.software.ibm.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-0930 since 01/06/2014. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3549 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73837 (AIX 7.1 TL 2 : ptrace (IV58861)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family AIX Local Security Checks.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
