A vulnerability classified as critical was found in F5 BIG-IQ 4.1.0.2013.0. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the file /mgmt/shared/authz/users/. The manipulation of the argument name
with an unknown input leads to a credentials management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-255. As an impact it is known to affect integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
F5 BIG-IQ Cloud and Security 4.0.0 through 4.1.0 allows remote authenticated users to change the password of arbitrary users via the name parameter in a request to the user s page in mgmt/shared/authz/users/.
The weakness was disclosed 05/01/2014 by Brandon Perry as F5 BIG-IQ v4.1.0.2013.0 authenticated arbitrary user password change as not defined posting (Blog). The advisory is shared at volatile-minds.blogspot.ch. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-3220 since 05/05/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1552 for this issue. The advisory points out:
Within the above request, by changing the “name” key to another user’s username (such as root or admin), the user changing the password will magically have the impersonated user’s privileges. However, your displayed username (what was someguy) will now be the one used in the request. So if you used ‘root’, your displayed username will now be root. You will still log in with ‘someguy’. After gaining the permissions of the other user, you immediately see the other users you can edit.
A public exploit has been developed by Brandon Perry in HTTP PUT Request and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at volatile-minds.blogspot.ch. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73950 (F5 Networks BIG-IQ Configuration Utility Privilege Escalation), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (93007), Exploit-DB (33143), Tenable (73950), SecurityFocus (BID 67191†) and OSVDB (106532†). Additional details are provided at seclists.org. The entry VDB-13157 is pretty similar.
