The php_handle_iff function in image.c for PHP 4.2.2, 4.3.9, 4.3.10 and 5.0.3, as reachable by the getimagesize PHP function, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop) via a -8 size value.

The bug was discovered 02/23/2005. The weakness was shared 03/31/2005 with iDEFENSE (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at php.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-0524 since 02/23/2005. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1499 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 36 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 18437 (Mac OS X Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Update 2005-006)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117972 (CentOS Security Update for PHP (CESA-2005:405)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at php.net. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
