Untrusted search path vulnerability in Microsoft Office 2007 SP3, 2010 SP1 and SP2, and 2013 Gold, SP1, RT, and RT SP1, when the Simplified Chinese Proofing Tool is enabled, allows local users to gain privileges via a Trojan horse DLL in the current working directory, as demonstrated by a directory that contains a .docx file, aka "Microsoft Office Chinese Grammar Checking Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 01/30/2007. The weakness was disclosed 05/13/2014 with NSFOCUS as MS14-023 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-1756 since 01/29/2014. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1574 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2660 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73982 (MS14-023: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2961037)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110237 (Microsoft Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS14-023)).
Applying the patch MS14-023 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10880.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (73982), SecurityFocus (BID 67274†), Secunia (SA58136†), SecurityTracker (ID 1030230†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-44478†).
