The find_replen function in jsstr.c in the Javascript engine for Mozilla Suite 1.7.6, Firefox 1.0.1 and 1.0.2, and Netscape 7.2 allows remote attackers to read portions of heap memory in a Javascript string via the lambda replace method.

The weakness was presented 04/04/2005 by moz_bug_r_a4 with Secunia (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at cubic.xfo.org.ru. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2005-0989 since 04/06/2005. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

The exploit is shared for download at secunia.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21952 (CentOS 4 : thunderbird (CESA-2005:601)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117973 (CentOS Security Update for Mozilla (CESA-2005:384)).
