Microsoft Windows iSCSI Packets input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1/Server 2008 SP2/Server 2012/Server 2012 R2 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component iSCSI Packets Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

Microsoft Windows Server 2008 SP2 and R2 SP1 and Server 2012 Gold allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (iSCSI service outage) by sending many crafted packets, aka "iSCSI Target Remote Denial of Service Vulnerability."

The weakness was shared 05/13/2014 as MS14-028 as confirmed bulletin (Technet) via SecuriTeam Secure Disclosure. The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-0256 since 12/03/2013. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/19/2021). The advisory points out:

Servers with the iSCSI target role enabled are affected.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73987 (MS14-028: Vulnerabilities in iSCSI Could Allow Denial of Service (2962485)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90953 (Microsoft Windows iSCSI Target Remote Denial of Service Vulnerability (MS14-028)).

Applying the patch MS14-028 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com.Proper firewalling of tcp/3260 (iSCSI) is able to address this issue. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (73987), Secunia (SA58281†), SecurityTracker (ID 1030234†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-44487†). Additional details are provided at blog.spiderlabs.com. The entries VDB-13223, VDB-13222, VDB-13226 and VDB-13225 are related to this item. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
