with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The software performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was presented 02/18/2014 by Petr Matousek as Bug 1066354 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-4530 since 06/12/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The advisory points out:
An user able to alter the savevm data (either on the disk or over the wire during migration) could use this flaw to to corrupt QEMU process memory on the (destination) host, which could potentially result in arbitrary code execution on the host with the privileges of the QEMU process.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74047 (Fedora 20 : qemu-1.6.2-5.fc20 (2014-6288)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168804 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for xen (SUSE-SU-2016:1318-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.qemu.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (93230), Vulnerability Center (SBV-47092) and Tenable (74047). See 13023, 13254, 13266 and 13267 for similar entries.
