Fabrice Bellard QEMU 1.7.0 pxa2xx_ssp_load memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Fabrice Bellard QEMU 1.7.0 (Virtualization Software). This affects the function pxa2xx_ssp_load. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Buffer overflow in the pxa2xx_ssp_load function in hw/arm/pxa2xx.c in QEMU before 1.7.2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service or possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted s->rx_level value in a savevm image.

The weakness was published 02/18/2014 by Petr Matousek as Bug 1066404 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-4533 since 06/12/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The advisory points out:

s->rx_level is read from the wire and used to determine how many bytes to subsequently read into s->rx_fifo[]. If s->rx_level exceeds the length of s->rx_fifo[] the buffer can be overrun with arbitrary data from the wire. An user able to alter the savevm data (either on the disk or over the wire during migration) could use this flaw to to corrupt QEMU process memory on the (destination) host, which could potentially result in arbitrary code execution on the host with the privileges of the QEMU process.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74047 (Fedora 20 : qemu-1.6.2-5.fc20 (2014-6288)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168804 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for xen (SUSE-SU-2016:1318-1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.qemu.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (93232) and Tenable (74047). Similar entries are available at 13023, 13254, 13266 and 13267.
