A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Fabrice Bellard QEMU 1.7.0 (Virtualization Software). This vulnerability affects the function openpic_load
of the component Migration Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Buffer overflow in hw/intc/openpic.c in QEMU before 1.7.2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service or possibly execute arbitrary code via vectors related to IRQDest elements.
The weakness was released 02/18/2014 by Petr Matousek as Bug 1066405 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-4534 since 06/12/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The advisory points out:
opp->nb_cpus is read from the wire and used to determine how many IRQDest elements to read into opp->dst[]. If the value exceeds the length of opp->dst[], MAX_CPU, opp->dst[] can be overrun with arbitrary data from the wire. An user able to alter the savevm data (either on the disk or over the wire during migration) could use this flaw to to corrupt QEMU process memory on the (destination) host, which could potentially result in arbitrary code execution on the host with the privileges of the QEMU process.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74047 (Fedora 20 : qemu-1.6.2-5.fc20 (2014-6288)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168775 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for xen (SUSE-SU-2016:1154-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.qemu.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (93233) and Tenable (74047). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 13023, 13216, 13254 and 13266.
