Microsoft Internet Explorer up to 11 CMarkup resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Use-after-free vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted JavaScript code that interacts improperly with a CollectGarbage function call on a CMarkup object allocated by the CMarkup::CreateInitialMarkup function.

The issue has been introduced in 03/22/2001. The weakness was released 05/21/2014 by Peter Van Eeckhoutte (corelanc0d3r) with Core as ZDI-14-140 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at zerodayinitiative.com. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. The advisory contains:

This vulnerability is being disclosed publicly without a patch in accordance with the ZDI 180-day deadline.
This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-1770 since 01/29/2014. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/20/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product decreasing in the near future. This vulnerability has a historic impact due to its background and reception.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4808 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74138 (Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 CMarkup Use-After-Free Remote Code Execution), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100202 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS14-035)).

Applying the patch MS14-035 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. It is possible to mitigate the problem by applying the configuration setting Disable Scripts/ActiveX Controls. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13972.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (92807) and Tenable (74138). Additional details are provided at isc.sans.edu. Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 13498, 13512, 13511 and 13510.
