AVEVA Wonderware System Platform 2017 Update 2 and prior uses an ArchestrA network user account for authentication of system processes and inter-node communications. A user with low privileges could make use of an API to obtain the credentials for this account.

The bug was discovered 01/29/2019. The weakness was released 04/11/2019. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2019-6525 since 01/22/2019. The attack may be initiated remotely. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1552 for this issue.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 72 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
