The urllib3 library before 1.24.2 for Python mishandles certain cases where the desired set of CA certificates is different from the OS store of CA certificates, which results in SSL connections succeeding in situations where a verification failure is the correct outcome. This is related to use of the ssl_context, ca_certs, or ca_certs_dir argument.

The bug was discovered 04/18/2019. The weakness was disclosed 04/18/2019 (Website). The advisory is available at lists.fedoraproject.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2019-11324 since 04/18/2019. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1587.003 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 197469 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Python-urllib3 Vulnerabilities (USN-3990-1)).

Upgrading to version 1.24.2 eliminates this vulnerability.
