A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Cisco NX-OS on Nexus 9000 (Router Operating System). This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component System SHell. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
A vulnerability in the system shell for Cisco Nexus 9000 Series Fabric Switches in Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI) mode could allow an authenticated, local attacker to use symbolic links to overwrite system files. These system files may be sensitive and should not be overwritable by non-root users. The attacker would need valid device credentials. The vulnerability is due to incorrect symbolic link verification of directory paths when they are used in the system shell. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by authenticating to the device and providing crafted user input to specific symbolic link CLI commands. Successful exploitation could allow the attacker to overwrite system files that should be restricted. This vulnerability has been fixed in software version 14.1(1i).
The bug was discovered 05/01/2019. The weakness was disclosed 05/03/2019 as cisco-sa-20190501-fabric-trave as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at tools.cisco.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2019-1836 since 12/06/2018. Local access is required to approach this attack. A single authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1006 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 316434 (Cisco Nexus 9000 Series Fabric Switches Application Centric Infrastructure Mode Symbolic Link Path Traversal Vulnerability(cisco-sa-20190501-fabric-traversal)).
Upgrading to version 14.1(1i) eliminates this vulnerability.
