A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in PHP up to 7.1.28/7.2.17/7.3.4 (Programming Language Software). Affected by this issue is the function exif_process_IFD_TAG
of the component EXIF Extension. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. When processing certain files, PHP EXIF extension in versions 7.1.x below 7.1.29, 7.2.x below 7.2.18 and 7.3.x below 7.3.5 can be caused to read past allocated buffer in exif_process_IFD_TAG function. This may lead to information disclosure or crash.
The bug was discovered 04/30/2019. The weakness was disclosed 05/03/2019 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2019-11036 since 04/09/2019. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 172411 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for php5 (SUSE-SU-2019:1325-1)).
Upgrading to version 7.1.29, 7.2.18 or 7.3.5 eliminates this vulnerability.
