Sun Java JDK/SDK up to 1.5.0_02 Jar Archive path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Sun Java JDK and SDK up to 1.5.0_02 (Programming Language Software). Affected is an unknown function of the component Jar Archive Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:

Directory traversal vulnerability in the Java Archive Tool (Jar) utility in J2SE SDK 1.4.2 and 1.5, and OpenJDK, allows remote attackers to create or overwrite arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in filenames in a .jar file.

The bug was discovered 04/09/2005. The weakness was shared 04/11/2005 by pluf (Website). The advisory is shared for download at secunia.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2005-1080 since 04/12/2005. The attack needs to approached within the local network. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.

After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 18852 (FreeBSD : jdk -- jar directory traversal vulnerability (18e5428f-ae7c-11d9-837d-000e0c2e438a)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350187 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for java-1.6.0-openjdk: ALAS-2015-515).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at java.sun.com. A possible mitigation has been published 5 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (20034) and Tenable (18852). The entries 74934, 74925, 74929 and 74931 are related to this item.
