Details
A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Visual Studio 2002/2003/2005/2010 (Programming Tool Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality in the library msdia.dll of the component Debug Interface. The manipulation as part of a PDB File leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
msdia.dll in Microsoft Debug Interface Access (DIA) SDK, as distributed in Microsoft Visual Studio before 2013, does not properly validate an unspecified variable before use in calculating a dynamic-call address, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a crafted PDB file.
The weakness was disclosed 05/14/2014 by 80ceb6400c43bd3fa9f1ef561f7c51d929fe0199 as ZDI-14-129 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at zerodayinitiative.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-3802 since 05/20/2014. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74154 (MS KB2927432: Visual Studio Update 2 for Debug Interface Access SDK), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 91098 (Microsoft Visual Studio DIA SDK "msdia.dll" Memory Corruption Vulnerability).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at go.microsoft.com.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (93569), Tenable (74154), SecurityFocus (BID 67398†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-44714†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
