A vulnerability was found in Ipswitch WS_FTP Server up to 8.6.0 (File Transfer Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown code in the library SSHServerAPI.dll. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

A Directory Traversal issue was discovered in SSHServerAPI.dll in Progress ipswitch WS_FTP Server 2018 before 8.6.1. An attacker can supply a string using special patterns via the SCP protocol to disclose WS_FTP usernames as well as filenames.

The weakness was published 06/11/2019 (Website). The advisory is shared at docs.ipswitch.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2019-12143 since 05/16/2019. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.

Upgrading to version 8.6.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
