A vulnerability was found in Netscape Communicator up to 4.51 (Web Browser). It has been classified as critical. Affected is some unknown functionality of the component view-source. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 10021 (CGI view-source Directory Traversal Vulnerability).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 848. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 970.
