SGI IRIX 5.3/6.2/6.3 df memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in SGI IRIX 5.3/6.2/6.3 (Operating System). This issue affects some unknown processing of the component df. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

root privileges via buffer overflow in df command on sgi irix systems.

The issue has been introduced in 11/01/1994. The weakness was presented 05/24/1997 by David Hedley as not defined posting (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at cert.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-1999-0025. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 935 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at X-Force (440). See 13947, 13946, 13945 and 13944 for similar entries.
