Details
A vulnerability was found in iCat Electronic Commerce Suite 3.0.0. It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown function in the library carbo.dll. The manipulation of the argument icatcommand with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
directory traversal vulnerability in carbo.dll in icat carbo server 3.0.0 allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in the icatcommand parameter.
The bug was discovered 11/08/1997. The weakness was released 11/08/1997 by Mikael Johansson as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-1999-1069. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 10112 (icat carbo.dll icatcommand Parameter Traversal Arbitrary File Access), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 23012 (icat" CGI Vulnerability).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 1001. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 845.
