A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in RealNetworks RealPlayer Enterprise up to 1.7 (Multimedia Player Software). Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component RAM File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). Heap-based buffer overflow in RealPlayer 10 and earlier, Helix Player before 10.0.4, and RealOne Player v1 and v2 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long hostname in a RAM file.
The bug was discovered 04/20/2005. The weakness was released 04/20/2005 by Piotr Bania with RealNetworks (Website). The advisory is available at service.real.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2005-0755 since 03/17/2005. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115261 (RealNetworks RealPlayer Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 1.0.4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at docs.real.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 2438. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9139.
