Vulnerabilities in (1) ipxchk and (2) ipxlink in NetWare Client 1.0 on IRIX 6.3 and 6.4 allows local users to gain root access via a modified IFS environmental variable.

The issue has been introduced in 09/01/1996. The weakness was released 04/08/1998 as not defined posting (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at marc.theaimsgroup.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-1999-1040. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation.
