Citrix Program Neighborhood Agent for Win32 8.00.24737 and earlier and MetaFrame Presentation Server client for WinCE before 8.33 allows remote servers to create arbitrary shortcuts on the client via a full UNC path in the AppInStartmenu directive.
The bug was discovered 11/23/2004. The weakness was disclosed 04/22/2005 by Patrik Karlsson (Agent) with Citrix (Website). The advisory is shared at support.citrix.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2004-1077 since 11/29/2004. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
Upgrading to version 9.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at citrix.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
