A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Nostromo nhttpd up to 1.9.6 (Web Server). This vulnerability affects the function SSL_accept
. The manipulation as part of a HTTP Request leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
Directory Traversal in the function SSL_accept in nostromo nhttpd through 1.9.6 allows an attacker to trigger a denial of service via a crafted HTTP request.
The weakness was disclosed 10/14/2019. This vulnerability was named CVE-2019-16279 since 09/13/2019. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
