xcfa up to 5.0.0 Temp File race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in xcfa up to 5.0.0 and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component Temp File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

xcfa before 5.0.1 creates temporary files insecurely which could allow local users to launch a symlink attack and overwrite arbitrary files.

The bug was discovered 08/15/2014. The weakness was shared 11/21/2019 by Steve Kemp. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-5254 since 08/15/2014. Attacking locally is a requirement. The requirement for exploitation is a simple authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1924 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.

Upgrading to version 5.0.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at SecurityFocus (BID 69020†). The entry VDB-146040 is related to this item. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
