The file download dialog in Mozilla Firefox 0.10.1 and 1.0 for Windows allows remote attackers to hide the real file types of downloaded files via the Content-Type HTTP header and a filename containing whitespace, dots, or ASCII byte 160.
The bug was discovered 05/12/2005. The weakness was shared 05/12/2005 by Andreas Sandblad with Secunia Research und Microsoft (Website). The advisory is available at secunia.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-1575 since 05/14/2005. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.
Upgrading to version 1.0.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at mozilla.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
