OpenBSD up to 3.6 TCP Connection Timestamp denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in OpenBSD up to 3.6 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component TCP Connection Timestamp Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple TCP implementations with Protection Against Wrapped Sequence Numbers (PAWS) with the timestamps option enabled allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (connection loss) via a spoofed packet with a large timer value, which causes the host to discard later packets because they appear to be too old.

The bug was discovered 05/18/2005. The weakness was presented 05/19/2005 by Noritoshi Demizu with US-CERT (Website). The advisory is shared at openbsd.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-0356 since 02/11/2005. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.

After 2 days, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78204 (F5 Networks BIG-IP : Inadequate validation for TCP segments (SOL4743)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family F5 Networks Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ftp.openbsd.org. A possible mitigation has been published 3 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (20635), Tenable (78204) and Exploit-DB (1008). secunia.com is providing further details. See 1489, 1490, 1491 and 1535 for similar entries.
