A vulnerability has been found in bzip2 up to 1.0.3 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the component bzip2 Archive Decompressor. The bug was discovered 05/04/2005. The weakness was presented 05/23/2005 by Chris Evans with Google Chrome Security Team (Website). The advisory is available at scary.beasts.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-1260 since 04/25/2005. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1499 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
After even before and not, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is possible to download the exploit at scary.beasts.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 15 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 18645 (Debian DSA-741-1 : bzip2 - infinite loop), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117757 (CentOS Security Update for Bzip2 (CESA-2005:474)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at bzip.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
