wu-ftp with FTP conversion enabled allows an attacker to execute commands via a malformed file name that is interpreted as an argument to the program that does the conversion, e.g. tar or uncompress.
The weakness was presented 12/20/1999 by suid as DSA-377 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at debian.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-1999-0997.
