The Expression Evaluator sample application in ColdFusion allows remote attackers to read or delete files on the server via exprcalc.cfm, which does not restrict access to the server properly.

By approaching the search of inurl:exprcalc.cfm it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 10001 (ColdFusion Multiple Vulnerabilities (File Upload/Manipulation)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 10045 (Allaire Macromedia ColdFusion Remote File Display, Deletion, Upload and Execution Vulnerability).

Upgrading to version 4.0.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 911. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 428.
