Details
A vulnerability was found in Newlib libc Library up to 3.2.x (Software Library). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function __i2b
in the library newlib/libc/stdlib/mprec.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
In the __i2b function of the newlib libc library, all versions prior to 3.3.0 (see newlib/libc/stdlib/mprec.c), Balloc is used to allocate a big integer, however no check is performed to verify if the allocation succeeded or not. The access of _ x[0] will trigger a null pointer dereference bug in case of a memory allocation failure.
The weakness was released 03/19/2020 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at census-labs.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2019-14874 since 08/10/2019. The attack may be launched remotely. The requirement for exploitation is a simple authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
