A vulnerability was found in Horde Groupware Webmail Edition 5.2.22 (Groupware Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality of the file edit.php. The manipulation of the argument params[template]
as part of a Parameter leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-23. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute local PHP files on affected installations of Horde Groupware Webmail Edition 5.2.22. Authentication is required to exploit this vulnerability. The specific flaw exists within edit.php. When parsing the params[template] parameter, the process does not properly validate a user-supplied path prior to using it in file operations. An attacker can leverage this in conjunction with other vulnerabilities to execute code in the context of the www-data user. Was ZDI-CAN-10469.
The weakness was disclosed 03/23/2020. This vulnerability was named CVE-2020-8865 since 02/11/2020. The attack can be initiated remotely. The successful exploitation needs a single authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1006 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. By approaching the search of inurl:edit.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
