A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0/4.0.1/5.0/5.0.1 (Web Browser). This issue affects some unknown processing of the component Image Access Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Internet Explorer 4.x and 5.x allows remote web servers to access files on the client that are outside of its security domain, aka the "Image Source Redirect" vulnerability.
The issue has been introduced in 04/01/1997. The weakness was shared 02/16/2000 as MS00-009 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2000-0156. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1051 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.
Applying the patch MS00-009 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com.
