IBM WebSphere Application Server up to 5.0.2.11 Administration Console Authentication memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in IBM WebSphere Application Server up to 5.0.2.11 (Application Server Software). Affected is some unknown functionality of the component Administration Console Authentication. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Buffer overflow in the administrative console in IBM WebSphere Application Server 5.x, when the global security option is enabled, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code.

The bug was discovered 06/02/2005. The weakness was disclosed 06/03/2005 by Esteban Martínez Fayó with Argeniss (Website). The advisory is available at www-1.ibm.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2005-1872 since 06/08/2005. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.

Upgrading to version 5.0.2.11 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at www-1.ibm.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 3693. In this case the pattern POST is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9077.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at X-Force (20871).
