A vulnerability has been found in Red Hat Linux 6.0/6.1/6.2 (Operating System) and classified as critical. The pam_console PAM module in Linux systems performs a chown on various devices upon a user login, but an open file descriptor for those devices can be maintained after the user logs out, which allows that user to sniff activity on these devices when subsequent users log in.
The issue has been introduced in 04/26/1999. The weakness was published 05/03/2000 by Michal Zalewski (Website). The advisory is shared for download at archives.neohapsis.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2000-0378. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 373 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
