The web interface server in HP Web JetAdmin 5.6 allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) attack.
The bug was discovered 05/24/2000. The weakness was disclosed 05/24/2000 by Ussr Labs (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at archives.neohapsis.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2000-0443. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 86223 (HP Web JetAdmin Directory Traversal Vulnerability).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 1125.
