ntp up to 4.2.8p14/4.3.100 ntpd Packet memory allocation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in ntp up to 4.2.8p14/4.3.100 (Network Management Software). This affects an unknown code block of the component ntpd. The manipulation as part of a Packet leads to a memory allocation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-789. The product allocates memory based on an untrusted, large size value, but it does not ensure that the size is within expected limits, allowing arbitrary amounts of memory to be allocated. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

ntpd in ntp 4.2.8 before 4.2.8p15 and 4.3.x before 4.3.101 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) by sending packets, because memory is not freed in situations where a CMAC key is used and associated with a CMAC algorithm in the ntp.keys file.

The weakness was shared 06/24/2020. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2020-15025 since 06/24/2020. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. Additional levels of successful authentication are needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

Upgrading to version 4.2.8p15 or 4.3.101 eliminates this vulnerability.
