FreeBSD up to 3.2 fts perodic memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.
8.4$0-$5k0.00

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in FreeBSD up to 3.2 (Operating System). Affected by this issue is the function perodic of the file fts. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Buffer overflow in FreeBSD fts library routines allows local user to modify arbitrary files via the periodic program.

The weakness was released 09/15/1999 by Patrick Oonk (Website). The advisory is available at ftp.freebsd.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-1999-0761. The exploitation is known to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a exploit are known.

An exploit has been developed in ANSI C and been published even before and not after the advisory. The exploit is available at packetstormsecurity.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 257 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at X-Force (3304). Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at 16507.
