Telnetd telnet server in IRIX 5.2 through 6.1 does not properly cleans user-injected format strings, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via a long RLD variable in the IAC-SB-TELOPT_ENVIRON request.
The weakness was published 10/20/2000 as not defined posting (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at archives.neohapsis.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2000-0733. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
