Affected by this issue is the function InvokeVerb in the library ShellDefView of the component Web-Based Folder Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The web-based folder display capability in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 on Windows 98 allows local users to insert Trojan horse programs by modifying the Folder.htt file and using the InvokeVerb method in the ShellDefView ActiveX control to specify a default execute option for the first file that is listed in the folder.

The issue has been introduced in 06/25/1998. The weakness was disclosed 10/20/2000 by Georgi Guninski (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2000-0790. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. The successful exploitation requires a simple authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 848 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
