in the library ShellDefView of the component Web-Based Folder Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. The web-based folder display capability in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 on Windows 98 allows local users to insert Trojan horse programs by modifying the Folder.htt file and using the InvokeVerb method in the ShellDefView ActiveX control to specify a default execute option for the first file that is listed in the folder.
The issue has been introduced in 06/25/1998. The weakness was disclosed 10/20/2000 by Georgi Guninski (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2000-0790. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. The successful exploitation requires a simple authentication.
