NETBIOS client in Windows 95 and Windows 98 allows a remote attacker to cause a denial of service by changing a file sharing service to return an unknown driver type, which causes the client to crash.

The issue has been introduced in 08/24/1995. The weakness was shared 12/11/2000 by NSFOCUS with NSFOCUS Security Team as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2000-1003. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
