A vulnerability was found in Mandrakesoft Mandrake Linux 6.1/7.0/7.1. It has been classified as very critical. Affected is the function vsyslog
of the component ypserv. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Buffer overflow in ypserv in Mandrake Linux 7.1 and earlier, and possibly other Linux operating systems, allows an attacker to gain root privileges when ypserv is built without a vsyslog() function.
The weakness was disclosed 12/11/2000 as MDKSA-2000:064 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at linux-mandrake.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2000-1042. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication.
