A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel (Operating System) (the affected version unknown). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown part of the component IPsec. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cleartext transmission vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-319. The product transmits sensitive or security-critical data in cleartext in a communication channel that can be sniffed by unauthorized actors. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's implementation of some networking protocols in IPsec, such as VXLAN and GENEVE tunnels over IPv6. When an encrypted tunnel is created between two hosts, the kernel isn't correctly routing tunneled data over the encrypted link; rather sending the data unencrypted. This would allow anyone in between the two endpoints to read the traffic unencrypted. The main threat from this vulnerability is to data confidentiality.
The weakness was disclosed 09/09/2020 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2020-1749 since 11/27/2019. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/12/2024). This vulnerability is assigned to T1040 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 208646 (CentOS 7 : kernel-alt (RHSA-2021:0354)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
